I was speaking with one of my friends yesterday and she started telling me about her new lease of ‘Zen’. This reinvigorated outlook, originally stemming from a self-help book, has taught her how to take control, how to make more conscious decisions and how to live life with a more positive attitude. While books such as these can often be controversial, it did get me thinking about the age of contentment and comparison in which we live.

She went on to say that while she feels she isn’t exactly where she wants to be in life right now, this recent guidance has helped her to feel more confident in making sensible decisions going forward. Rather than feeling pessimistic or unmotivated about the current situation she’s in – something I think we can all put our hands up too – it has helped her to see the potential in thinking to success.

I feel that nowadays, if we’re not working hard or maintaining busy social lives and travel schedules, then it is deemed we must be unhappy or lacking ambition. Whatever happened to working to live, rather than living to work? Along similar lines, I was reading an article the other day which was focused on someone’s working day routine. Forging a career within the digital media industry, she was saying her days often involved late nights, take-outs and sometimes not returning home until after midnight, although surprisingly, she didn’t seem to mind this lack of work/life balance.

My friend finished by telling me about another of her friends who is now starting to settle down and feeling perfectly content. To this I thought, what a lovely and humbling outlook that must be. In the age of social media, it’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing and thinking the grass is always greener, but what’s important, ultimately, is what makes you happy and content. While some love to travel, there are others who are perfectly happy staying at home; and for all those who have their career path mapped out working day and night to reach it, many more will be working simply to make a comfortable home-life for themselves.

While I’m not sure where I slot into this, I do know that contentment is one of life’s greatest feelings and something we should all hope to master one day.
