Speaking to my friend the other day, it seems I’m not the only one who often feels consumed by work. Lately I feel as though my work/life balance isn’t quite where I want it to be. I feel it’s unbalanced in fact, that I find myself thinking more and more about work when I’m not at work; with weekends passing me by in a flash before Monday morning rolls round again.

The thing is, I enjoy my job. I get to do something I love – write – but while this may be the case, you can still get down days. Days where you don’t perhaps enjoy it as much as the day before. Or days where you feel as though you’re chasing your tail or there’s simply too much on your to-do list.

So, what’s the answer? To be honest, I don’t have one. I think if you speak to most people, many would say they work too hard or don’t have enough free time. Perhaps that’s what it is. You don’t have enough time to spend what you really love doing. Time spent with friends and family. Time in the garden or at the beach. Days spent tackling DIY or doing absolutely nothing.

How do we find and achieve that work/life balance then? How do we ensure that when we do go to work, we feel rested and motivated because we’ve spent sufficient time doing things that we love too?

Summer always make this balance that little bit better. The longer evenings enable us to spend time outside or enjoy relaxed al fresco dinners with friends.

Finding that work/life balance is so integral. Not only is it the key to happiness – or so I think – we do have to go to work after all; but it makes us much more adept at our jobs too. It allows us to enjoy the time we don’t spend at work – and isn’t that the most important thing? Feeling as though we have enough time to do those things that really matter?
