If like me you’ve recently started a new job then, this goes out to you; you are not alone. Your first day is a mixture of that nervous knot of thorns in your stomach and that exciting buzzing in your head. “What if they don’t like me?” “What if I don’t like them!?” “I’m going to do so well!” “Oh my god what if I fail?” There’s no way of knowing that you’ll get along with the people that you work with, you just have to hope that you do. After all, you’ll spend more time with these people than with your own family, or your friends, even the person that you love. A strange and sad fact, but a fact none the less. There’s also no telling whether you’ll succeed or fall flat on your face, but you have to try.
After settling at your new desk, wiping off the dust and crumbs left by the person before, you log on unsure of exactly where to start. Everyone introduces themselves in fits and starts, you’ll answer the same questions over and over, but if you’re lucky, they’ll all seem friendly. Your body is screaming out for coffee, but you’re not yet acquainted with the communal kitchen rules and you have no idea where anything is! So you patiently wait for someone to ask if you want a drink, fighting the urge to scream “finally!” You politely say “yes please.”
A few hours in and you’ve already been bombarded with so much new information that you think you might burst. You consider sneaking out and retreating back to your bed in hopes you never have to attempt being an adult ever again. Domino’s on speed dial and Netflix in bed seems like a pretty good deal at that moment in time to be honest.
So your first day is over and you’re exhausted. You pack up and start your journey home, reflecting on your first day. You made it! Bed has never felt so good and you drift off after setting you alarm to do it all again tomorrow. Welcome to the rest of your working life – at times it’ll be strenuous and the early mornings may get you down, but dream of payday and imagine how extra special your weekends will feel, you’ll never appreciate a Saturday morning lie in or a Sunday roast more than you will now. And take it from me – a girl that has always hated working, but loved spending money – if you can find the right one, having a job isn’t actually that bad at all.
