Just when we thought we’d conquered contouring, along come new trends that dominate the beauty pages of every fashion bible on the shelf. It’s costly enough topping up our make-up bags with our everyday essentials, but when new looks arrive it can be hard to know whether we should invest our pennies in new products and just give it a go, or admit that our skills only go so far as winged liner. We’ve listed the latest beauty trends below and given an honest evaluation of their high street credentials. Can catwalk looks work in reality?
Strobing
For the summer season at least, contouring has gone to the back of the queue, as achieving a dewy glowing look is what it’s all about. Layering shimmering shades of foundation over a face full of highlighter is what this trend is all about, and we can’t deny that we’ve been hooked by some of the beautiful YouTubers currently tutoring us on this trend. But honestly? This one is definitely best left to the catwalk. Like it wasn’t hard enough battling a shiny face when you’ve been sweating buckets during the heatwave? Unfortunately as much as it’s a hit on the Internet, in real-life it looks like we’ve simply got a super sweaty face.
Ombre Lips
Applying two different shades of lipstick to each lip most definitely feels bizarre, but this trend could actually be quite a funky look for a festival or a party, it just doesn’t quite look as effective when you’re sat behind a desk for your day job. Strange looks are a given with this one, so unless you don’t mind the glances and the silly comments, perhaps keep this one in your ammunition for the party season.
Blue Mascara
It’s oh so very 80’s but blue mascara is back with a vengeance, and if there’s one way we like to update our beauty bags it’s with one product and one product alone. Not only does it enhance your eyes for the ultimate wow factor, there’s zero makeup skills required. You simply brush it on and let the colour speak for itself. This certainly makes a difference to default black, and it feels a little fun to experiment with colour. Give it a go and see if you could be a blue eyed girl.
Double Winged Liner
If perfecting the cat eye flick was hard to begin with, this new trend sees the flick going below the bottom lash line as well, creating a dual flick that gives the most Cleopatra-esque eye style we’ve ever laid eyes on. It’s stunning and truly mesmerising, but unless you’ve got great skills with your liquid liner we’d leave this one to the professionals.
