It is often around this time of year, that I wish I had a holiday home abroad. Somewhere hot and sunny that I could escape to in order to avoid the desperately dark days of winter ahead.
I’ve said it before no doubt, but I always struggle with the light disappearing during these months. I long for summer evenings and bright mornings. I know many look forward to cosy evenings in – as I do – but arriving to and leaving from work in the dark is something I always find particularly difficult.
Perhaps this is the perfect time of year to book a holiday then. To escape the damp, drizzle and cold winds. To venture off for a long weekend or even longer to feel the heat of the sun and soak up its rays before returning for Christmas.
I remember speaking to someone once who did just that. They enjoy the summer months here in England and then spend a month or two abroad to get away from the worst of the British weather. It’s a nice idea, isn’t it? Although of course, many of us can’t simply jet off for more than a few weeks, so it’s about finding the right destination that will help to ease the struggle of winter. If you feel it.
Perhaps you look forward to these months. Jetting off to the slopes of France or Switzerland to make the most of it. If, however, you’re like me – and Australia is just a little bit too far -then the coastlines of Croatia and Greece, a city break in Spain or the blue seas of the Canary Islands, may fair a better option.
If I were to take my own advice and go away, I always think January is perhaps the better month. We find ourselves now preparing for Halloween and Christmas – but those months following the festive season, just before the first signs of spring arrive, provide the perfect getaway period.
So, where will you go?
