We thought about time so differently growing up. We would wish our lives away waiting for that birthday party, that holiday, or that Christmas for that present. We would be wishing we were older too. Old enough to buy makeup, to vote, to buy alcohol or be able to go out and party.

I always remember my parents saying; stop wishing your life away. Once you get older you won’t be wishing the time away like this.

I think when you’re younger, you don’t always appreciate time. It seems infinite, never ending. We don’t think about getting older – or if we do it’s a good thing. It opens up more doors and more possibilities to be older than we are.

As you grow older though – and as I’m starting to realise – time goes far too quickly. You hardly blink and it’s the weekend again, or Christmas and new year are just around the corner. It’s true when they say time waits for no-one. It goes around and around, never stopping for a moment. Sometimes it drags and goes ever so slowly, and other times it whizzes you by in the blink of an eye.

The more time that passes, the more you find yourself reminiscing too. Of days and years gone by. In a world that is constantly busy, busy, busy, I think it’s increasingly difficult to take a step back and enjoy the moment. There is almost too much going on or too many things to be doing. As a child, time is a luxury. A given almost because you don’t have deadlines to adhere to or a schedule to keep.

This is why it’s so important to take a moment. Whether it’s every day or every week, having a moment to just stop can make a world of difference to a hectic day or feeling overwhelmed. Whether you take a walk, have time alone or enjoy a meal out by yourself, just having that moment to decompress, to relax and restore can make all the difference.

We’ll never enjoy the worry-free, uninterrupted time we enjoyed as kids perhaps, but taking a moment as adults is almost the same thing.
