Expensive and uncomfortable are the only words I can use to describe your bog standard bra and ever since my early teenage self woke up to the realisation that I was turning into a woman, I knew these annoying but necessary pieces of clothing were a burden that I would have to live with for the rest of my life.

Although I’ve been the proud owner of my C cups for around 9 years now, it’s only in the last couple of months that I’ve discovered the liberating and extremely comfortable bra alternative – the sports bra. Who knew that these types of bra that society deems ‘unsexy’ could actually offer me the support I’ve been searching for all of these years? And it happened by chance.

Back from university and settling into my full time job in marketing I had more time on my hands and more money to play with, I decided I wanted to tone up and join the gym. But of course I couldn’t do so without taking the right precautions, so I reluctantly headed to a sports shop in search of a sports bra. I had always thought they would be ugly, chunky and restraining, but I never could have imagined how wrong I would be.

Lined up were an array of colourful, understated and lightweight crop top looking bras – despite their purpose for keeping everything ‘under control’ they were surprisingly cute. So I grabbed my size and headed for the cashier, completely unaware that this was a moment that was going to change my life for the better.

I could jump up and down, run about and shake them as hard as I could without fear of two black eyes. I was shocked at how sexy I felt because of how much support it offered me. With a racer style back there’s no straps falling down, the elasticated bottom band was soft but firm in place and the side support meant it didn’t dig in – hallelujah! image2

With my sports bra liberation having taken me by surprise I was only upset that I hadn’t picked up a few more at the time. So if you’re yet to liberate yourself, take the plunge today, trust me your boobs will thank you later. Just remember to buy a couple!
