Sometimes we make big elaborate resolutions and stick to them. Sometimes we don’t. A New Year’s resolution is usually always only a positive thing: we want to give up a bad habit, get fit and healthy, save money, for example. Resolutions come in all shapes and sizes and last from anywhere between a day and a lifetime.

For me, simple resolutions that can have a big impact tend to work better than overwhelming massive lifestyle changes. That’s just me, for others (the ones with all the will power) the bigger resolutions work better. I thought I’d share with you some of my resolutions that might, in turn, enthuse some of yours.

Together, we can stick to them!

Walk more

It’s that simple: walk more. Not only is it better for you fitness wise, you also massively benefit from it mentally too. It’s a chance to have some time to yourself to be alone with your thoughts, get some clarity over any worries you may have. By walking more you also have the opportunity to see things you wouldn’t if you were travelling by car or public transport. You may even find your new favourite restaurant or stumble upon a hidden gem.

Put my phone down

One thing that irritates a lot of people is not having someone’s full attention. Sitting in front of a friends that you haven’t seen for a while and only making eye contact with them once throughout the entire conversation is not fun for anyone. They may have their eyes stuck to their glowing screens while their thumb scrolls past briefly read statuses while all the while only half listening to you. I will be more aware of how much time is spent on my phone. Capturing the present moment that I am in rather than print screening a picture I know my Whatsapp group of friends would find hilarious. Looking up more, rather than looking down.

I always have a book on the go. Reading is one of my favourite forms of escapism, but I tend to stick to the same genres, unsure of where to venture out next. This year I will be actively aware when choosing my next read. Almost like sticking my hand in a basket full of books on sale, eyes closed and hoping for the best – who knows what great reads I may come across. Why not go for a story where the ending isn’t predictable. Or choose a topic that you don’t have much knowledge on and get up to speed. Reading is a great way to unwind and relax.

 Don’t sweat the small stuff

What will be will be. If you have the power to change something for the better then do so, but if something is out of your control then worrying will not fix it. I have the habit of worrying over things that haven’t even happened yet, or something so minuscule that to anyone else it’s not even a problem. I will worry about it from every possible angle and ultimately get myself worked up for no good reason. If something can be changed then fix it, if it can’t then learn to leave it alone.
