It’s nearly time to pack away our favourite sun hats and the “oh, I only wore this once’” bikini to the back of our wardrobes. To wave goodbye to refillable Pimm’s jugs at our favourite summer haunts and say farewell to whiling away those long summer nights on spontaneous bike rides. All too soon we’ll welcome the onset of autumn and all that it has to offer including rich hot chocolates, pumpkin carving competitions, cosy evenings and, of course, the arrival of new season fashion trends.
I feel I should say here that I am well and truly a summer girl at heart so perhaps this is a rather unorthodox admission, but autumn is definitely my favourite season when it comes to fashion. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone here either. The anticipation of the new trends slowly seeping into stores following the summer sales — having seen glimpses back in the spring from the international runway shows — is a time I always look forward to.
Of course, as autumn and winter approach, we can expect the reappearance of the traditional winter florals, faux fur will no doubt make a return and as always, we are thoroughly spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing the perfect winter coat.
So, as we wave a final and tearful (on my part) adieu to the summer months, I’ve selected five popular trends for the season ahead to help inspire your autumn wardrobe.
Crushed Velvet
Making a popular return this season, velvet is a perfect choice as the months begin to grow colder. With beautiful midnight blues and rich emerald greens, Gucci, Emporio Armani and Prada showed us that we don’t always have to opt for black.
Modern Victoriana
Continuing with the popular trend of frills and ruffles that we have all fallen in love with this summer, the prairie trend is back with a bang for the new season. Ralph Lauren went for big and bold whilst Erdem opted for all over frills, adding a touch of the angelic.
The Colour Purple
Perhaps not a colour you’d normally gravitate towards, the runways were filled with sweet lilacs, deep aubergines and rich violets for this season. Add a pop of colour in the form of a bright accessory or, if you’re feeling brave, team dark purples with bright pinks – a sure way to brighten up a dull October morning.
The Pinstripe
Perfect for your autumn work wardrobe, the masculine pinstripe has had a makeover this season, as seen on the catwalks of Max Mara and Calvin Klein. Try adding a touch of femininity and team with ruffled blouses and pops of colour to soften the androgynous accents.
Let’s Sparkle
Get ready for the party season early with sequins, metallics and sparkling fabrics. And if you’re not the sparkly type don’t fret as you don’t have to adorn yourself head-to-toe. Take your cue from the likes of Erdem and Lanvin who showed us how to shine with subtlety and grace.
