I remember seeing a quote once on Pinterest:

“I always wonder why birds stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth. Then I ask myself the same question.”

Somehow, even years on, it still resonates with me. The idea that actually, we can go wherever we want. We can travel the world and make it our oyster. We can get on a train or on a plane, or we can drive and drive for many miles.

But, for many of us, there always seems to be something holding us back. Something telling us that we can’t do that or to stop dreaming. Whether it’s our bank account, our other half, our conscience or our job, or a culmination of all of the above. Commitment remains at the forefront of our lives. While technically, yes, we can simply book a plane ticket to anywhere in the world, spread our wings like the birds that fly high above us to unknown destinations, there will always be something holding us back.

When you’re young and free, it’s easier to venture off and explore, but as you grow older, this spontaneity inevitably wavers and the opportunity subsides as we look to spend our money on houses, weddings and pension pots.

While a round-the-world ticket may not quite be on the cards then, perhaps it’s time to look at that quote from a different perspective. Focus not on the distance travelled, but on the journey and on the destination itself.

I always think how many places there are to explore on and around my very own doorstep. The towns, villages and coastlines that I’m yet to explore. And within those, the pubs, quaint cafes and independent shops, not to mention the activities and seasonal events, all waiting to be discovered and attended.

People always say travel is one of the best investments you can make, that it opens your eyes and puts life into a whole perspective. While venturing off to the Far East or Asia may have to remain on the bucket list for now, adding in a few more local destinations – or one or two city breaks a little further afield – will no doubt encompass these irrefutable benefits too. Turns out, you don’t have to go far to spread your wings.
