Two month’s ago I wrote about giving the opening speech at the first Creative Women in business conference in Paphos, Cyprus. It was an international gathering of women and men eager to make connections, do business with and learn from each other.

A few days ago I returned to Cyprus, as Ambassador for Cyprus’ first international fashion designer of the year award (DOTY). Janice Ruffle, the inspiration behind the award is a successful entrepreneur based in Cyprus. In a nutshell Janice’s business creates the environment for people and therefore businesses to thrive. She is determined, dynamic and much loved.doty3

As each designer presented their garments and accessories I was heartened by their purpose, their creativity and their resourcefulness. The judging panel – comprised of world class designers and business people – had high expectations of the contestants. We explored the signature of each designer and asked about their experiences of running a fashion business. We touched garments, asked questions about the design process from mood board, to sketch, to making and wearing a garment. As I chaired the judging panel’s deliberations, I reflected on how being recognised can make a real difference to someone’s view of themselves.

At the glittering awards ceremony I was pleased to announce that Tryfonas Modestou had won the 2016 DOTY Award. Tryfonas is a name to watch out for and as Semple sponsored the winner’s prize you will be hearing more about his journey on to the international fashion circuit.

June has been a good Semple month. We also won an award! It’s good to be recognised.
