The power of a girl group is second to none – screaming fans, choreographed dances and catchy tunes are only a few of their often disorientating attractions. Over the years we’ve had our fair share of game changing girl groups from the Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child to Girls Aloud and The Pussycat Dolls, but now it’s all about Fifth Harmony.
Born from the American version of the X Factor the five girls auditioned separately, only to become one of the hottest girl groups in the charts right now. Having just celebrated their raunchy chart hit Work from Home receiving its Platinum status in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, things are going from good to better for this young group.
Now I must admit, that beneath my tom boy demeanour, there is absolutely nothing I love more than a girl group with a great pop song – so much so that I literally haven’t stopped listening to Fifth Harmony on repeat for about a week straight now. Sorry not sorry to anyone within a 2 mile radius of me who has either heard me trying to sing along out of tune, or has caught me twerking when I believed I was alone…
Girl groups have long been the powerhouses on the pop scene, stealing the show with their provocative lyrics, revealing stage outfits and synchronised dancing. Attracting audiences of young and old by preaching female sexuality and empowerment. Songs for women, and more importantly about women are the ultimate prize here, all hidden beneath a fun loving melody.
“Just encouraging girls to believe in themselves and love each other and love themselves, and just embracing, like, self-love.” – Normani Kordei
The release of their new album 7/27 has seen a whole host of new beats and harmonised vocals for their fans to sing along to on their US and European tour, and if their previous performances are anything to go by then it’ll be one hell of a party!
