Since growing up Christmas has taken on a new, more important meaning to me and to so many of my friends and family. We may not wake up at 6am, rushing downstairs excitedly to see if Santa has been, since we now cherish those lie-ins. There are no Scalextrics, bikes and Baby Born to open, instead we wish for new socks because we’re starting to run low. And we don’t huff and puff when we have to dress our best for Christmas lunch, because trust us we’ve had that outfit planned for weeks now! And although the face of Christmas is no longer that of the plump and rosy Santa Claus, instead it is the face of our loved ones and the time we get to spend with them.

“What if Christmas doesn’t come from a store? Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” – The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

Anyone that knows me well enough will tell you just how much I love Christmas, but I’m not afraid to admit that over the years I’ve questioned the holiday season more than a few times and for a couple of reasons; I’m not religious, I’m not rich and I also don’t have children. Those who are religious can relish in the spiritual aspects of Christmas and use it as a time to celebrate their beliefs. Wealthy people can splash out and afford to buy extraordinary gifts, and go out for multiple celebratory drinks and dinners. And those with children get to relive the magic of Christmas and Santa all over again. So what is it about Christmas that I still love so much?

It’s not the boxes under the tree, it’s not the food eaten and it’s not the numerous glasses of Prosecco drunk – although all of these things do soften the bank balance blow! Christmas is one day out of the year that you can all celebrate and wish happiness to your loved ones, whether near or far. I find it strangely comforting knowing that everyone I love is wishing the same, feeling the same and we are all connected in this way.

So whatever Christmas means to you, take some time to appreciate the ones you love and remember those who cannot be with you to celebrate. As you open your presents and tuck into your Christmas lunch be grateful, and stop to realise that there are some that will go without. And wherever you are, whatever your position, strive to be a better person in the New Year.
