Creative Director Hedi Slimane has announced his departure from Saint Laurent, but after injecting a much needed burst of life and energy into the brand over the past four years, his departure has come as a surprise to the fashion industry.
The French fashion house’s press release explains Slimane’s departure and accredits him for the brand’s redirection in recent times, owing him in time the honour of being a legendary figure in the history of the brand and its expected longevity.
In true Slimane fashion he has not gone quietly – throughout March he staged two shows that will not be long forgotten in the fashion world, one at the Hollywood Palladium in L.A and another secret show on the LeftBank in Paris. Both were as controversial and rebellious as we have come to expect from the brand since Slimane’s direction.

He will forever be known as one of their most daring directors – who dropped the ‘Yves’ from the brand’s name and used Courtney Love as his muse for their Grunge Collections throughout 2013. He managed, without a faltering mask of confidence, to take a classic beloved brand and thrust it into the mainstream all the while keeping its traditions and trademarks at the core. After all, what is fashion without risk?
With Slimane’s exit as Creative Director, YSL has now undoubtedly already set their sights on his predecessor – leaving the fashion world waiting for the big announcement. One thing’s for sure; whoever they are they have extremely big shoes to fill!
