Although we have been blessed with some truly glorious late summer days – last weekend was no exception – it finally feels as though autumn has arrived. The leaves are changing, there’s a notable nip in the air and the evenings have definitely been getting darker that bit earlier.

I’ve seen many people doing the ‘big switch over’ too. That seasonal wardrobe shift from summer to autumn. Bringing down all the cosy knitwear and winter boots and tucking away the summer dresses and holiday sandals. Despite the flurry of hot balmy days we’ve been having, I actually did this last week in preparation for the new season ahead. I always seem to put more away though than I take back out – perhaps because I tend to leave many of my jumpers and cardigans in my wardrobe over the summer months, knowing I’ll no doubt need them for chilly evenings.

It’s always the perfect time to really see what you have in your wardrobe too. To see what’s missing or determine what you’d like to add now the colder weather is soon to be arriving.

Cable Knit
For me, a chunky cable knit jumper is a must. Cream is always a good neutral colour that’ll go with everything; or navy. You could go slightly oversized to wear with skinny jeans or go more fitted to pair with tailored trousers and a blazer. Roll neck is an option too and ideal for those really chilly days. I always think it’s worth finding the right one though, and really investing in one you love.

Tailored Coat
Of course, this is an absolute staple come autumn. The trouble is there are so many to choose from. Puffer, pea or faux fur? I’m all for having multiple options but a tailored, slightly longer length, wool coat in a beautiful rust or camel colour will see you through into next spring.

Warm Scarf
This may sound menial, but a long tasselled (or no tassels) scarf in wool or cashmere can really help to elevate an outfit. Worn simply with a jumper, or a coat when we really get into the depths of winter, it’ll be a purchase you’ll be pleased you made. After all, it’s our outerwear that most people will see day-to-day as we step into this season so it’s always worth investing where you can.
