We’re all too familiar with the saying, time flies when you’re having fun. Throughout my childhood, it was a phrase used much more frequently as I sat longing for the summer holidays to last just one more week, or wishing that the school disco didn’t have to end on the dot at 9pm.

Looking back, although seemingly trivial now, it all felt so important back then. Perhaps it’s because growing up, you had fewer responsibilities and fewer worries. To me, school days and maths lessons would drag on and on, but Sunday afternoons spent playing outside would whizz by in what felt like seconds. Though even now, more than 20 years on, I still get that Sunday night feeling and those Monday morning blues. Come to think of it, so does my Mum – though my Dad, the lucky thing, has retired. I suppose here another saying comes into play: Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

But what if we’re not all fortunate enough to find a career or job that we love? For many of us, it’s simply a way to pay the bills as we spend the week looking forward to the weekend ahead.

With the evenings now growing lighter however, I think it’s a welcoming time to rejuvenate. We are no longer driving home in the dark and simply contemplating what to have for dinner, before going to bed. For the typical 9-5 workers, the lighter evenings open up a wealth of new opportunities. They allow us more time to wind down from work without simply looking at a TV screen (certainly something I’m guilty of), and the days, inevitably, seem longer for it. Even the simple joy of an evening dog walk is something I look forward to now spring has arrived.

I find myself no longer craving that lie in at the weekend as I’m keen to make the most of the day ahead. While lazing in bed until 10am is a rare treat, by the time I’m up and dressed, I can’t help but think I’d already be half way through a working day. Of course, it’s silly to think like that and sometimes a lazy day is just what is needed. Finding a healthy, happy and mindful balance is so important in such a career and financial-driven world. During the winter months it’s so easy to switch off and carry out the bare essentials that life requires, without giving much thought to what we really need, or perhaps want.

While it’s an important and necessary fact of life, work needn’t be the cornerstone of it. In fact, it is simply the means that allows you to live the life you want and enjoy those little moments.
