As you all know it’s the big V day on Saturday. Some of you may be excited, expecting that big bunch of roses to surprise you at work, or some of you may already have romantic evening plans booked months in advance. And then there are those who will bury their heads in the sand and hope they can get through the day without feeling like Bridget Jones. Yes of course there’s always the singletons out there who hate it with a passion, and feel the constant need to justify that their singledom is a lifestyle choice and by no means an example of their stronger relationship with netflix. But there are also some of us who have been in relationships for so long it’s an invalid day with an even lesser meaning.

Putting all our feelings aside of the lovey dovey, often vomit inducing romance stuff, perhaps there’s a different kind of love we should all put a focus on. Instead of rolling our eyes at another commercialised date, maybe we should embrace it and give out some love to those who need it the most.

Whilst we always think of romantic relationships at this time of year, why aren’t we celebrating the other relationships in our lives, or simply showing someone who’s having a tough time that we’re thinking of them?

Rather than spend our money on quite literally frivolous gifts, let’s surprise a friend with a lunch date or flowers, or even a random act of kindness to a stranger. The entire world needs a lot more love, and maybe we should just use it as a day of trying to put a little more love out there.

Of course everything is overpriced, from the belgian chocolates to the big red roses, and the latest rom com depicting the perfect relationship is being shoved in your face at any opportunity, but it’s also a day when many may feel lost or lonely. From a relative, to a friend, to a stranger, make the day one to remember for someone else. People need people, and in our hectic busy schedules just taking one day to find a way to brighten up someone else’s will work wonders for the soul, but also perhaps save someone from having a bad day. Because as the saying goes, when you give it a little love it all comes back to you!
