The thing about opportunity is that you have to grab it while it’s there. Inspired by those closest to me, unfortunately through saddened events, the concept of opportunity is one that is heavily on my mind. Too often we live in the past or the future and very rarely in the moment that we are gifted with. It’s easily done; we plan our careers, try and visualise what the next few years of our lives will look like, maybe even the next ten. We may dwell on the past, wondering what if instead of working with what and where we are now. We miss what is going on in this very real and visceral moment.
With opportunity often comes a risk. It is the risk taking aspect of opportunity that frightens many people and makes them choose to stay in the lane they are already in because they know where it will take them and that’s sometimes safer. But the greatest thing about risk taking and opportunities is that, if you allow it, the outcome usually exceeds all expectations.
When we were young, fearless and learning to walk, we would get knocked down time and time again. Sometimes it would hurt, we would cry. Sometimes we would lose our balance and topple over, sometimes we would grab for things that couldn’t take our weight and we would feel that heavy burden on top of us. But that didn’t matter, because at the next available opportunity we stood up and tried again until eventually we walked alone. I think we can learn something from our younger selves – being fearless in our desires to better ourselves in all aspects of our life. Being fearless in opportunities that have the potential to take us to the most incredible places, beyond anything or anywhere we could have potentially imagined ourselves going.
Above all the incredible truth is that one day our individual stories will unfold in front of us for all to read and I think that’s a story that all of us want to make a great one. So, when an opportunity comes your way, or you make your own opportunity happen, just remember that some of your most poignant memories to date would have stemmed from some form of opportunity. And in knowing that ask yourself, would you take those moments back? Be wise but fearless in the opportunities you get and trust your instincts – make your story one you’d be happy to read out loud.
