self love

Sometimes it’s all too easy to shower those we love with gifts, love and appreciation. We want to show those closest to us how important they are, how much they mean to us and how much we value them. This can be shown through a simple bunch of flowers, buying them their lunch or popping round to cheer them up when they need it most. We enjoy doing these things and it makes us feel happier that we’re helping and maintaining those all-important relationships.

In recent years however, it’s become more acceptable to treat and appreciate yourself too. I’m not necessarily talking about buying yourself a new designer handbag – although sometimes that might help – but more about taking time for yourself too. Realising that you are important and that you need attention too. This isn’t a pretentious plea for saying it should be all me, me, me, but rather for understanding that appreciation and self-love isn’t necessarily a selfish act.

Growing up, we are frequently told that we will always have to do things we don’t want to, that sometimes we have to be selfless, even if it means doing something we don’t want to do. I’m certainly not saying we should only be doing things we enjoy – but rather, don’t spend all your time thinking you must be doing things you don’t.

Helping others and spoiling those we love gives us that warm and fuzzy feeling, and sometimes it might be nice to attach this to ourselves too. Remember that to give love, you must also have love. It could be as simple as treating yourself to a takeaway coffee, indulging in a big bowl of ice-cream or taking an afternoon to yourself to have a bath or catch up on your favourite TV series.

We work hard, we value our friendships and we show those we love how much we care – so perhaps, once in a while, it might be time to show yourself the same dedication.
