Underwear as outerwear took the spotlight in 2016; epitomised by silk slip dresses, slinky camisoles and lace bralettes. Ruffles and sequins also rode high on the sartorial wave of 2016 as we ended the year on a luxe, high end feel. But with 2017 firmly underway, the fashion industry can expect some intriguing changes as we become immersed in a new year of trends. Here are our fashion predictions for 2017…

Stripes

Lacoste Spring/Summer 2017

Like a faithful old trench coat, stripes are the trend that keeps on giving, appearing season on season and never fail to make the grade. From thin diagonals to bold, striking blocks in varied colour bursts, stripes are back in like never before. Pair them with simple statement pieces like a flared trouser leg or your favourite denim and you’ll be well on your way to perfecting a truly classic style.

Activist Style

Dior Spring/Summer 2017

Slogan tops with empowering quotes and messages were all the rage on the spring 2017 runway with ‘activist chic’ set to be very popular in 2017. Feminism is becoming more prominent as each year passes and as such fashion grows and evolves to support it. Maria Grazia Chiuri presented an inspiring ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ tee on her debut Dior runway in the hope of pushing a message for this year. So make a statement and let your t-shirt do the talking.

Mules

Gucci Mules, £450, Net-a-Porter

A surprise hit of last summer, the mule is back and stronger than ever for 2017. The backless wonder is back in all kinds of fabrics and styles for the new season and we cannot wait to get our hands on a pair, or seven! Low block-heel mules, sneaker mules, espadrille mules and more; there really is no escaping this versatile option.

Diddy Bags

Last year was all about large, heavy tote bags big enough to accomodate even the most exaggerated of over-packers, but out with the old and in with the new as mini phone purses become the new craze. This year will be all about streamlining our daily essentials, and designers such as Louis Vuitton have already celebrated this trend through its Nicolas Ghesquiere ‘iPhone case version’ of the house brand’s leather bags. Handy and practical, we are welcoming this trend whole heartedly!

Bubblegum Pink

Valentino Spring/Summer 2017

Whilst blush pink made its presence known in the latter of 2016, its sister shade of bubblegum will take centre stage in 2017. Psychedelic pink garments have been earmarked for the year by brands such as Valentino, Gucci and Céline. But if all over block colour is a little too much to handle why not embrace the hue with select accessories or a pair of eye catching heels?
