It’s long been rumoured that Anna Wintour and Alexandra Shulman, Editors-in-Chief of U.S and British Vogue respectively, have been at fashion war but it now seems to have come to a head with last night’s airing of BBC 2’s documentary Absolutely Fashion: Inside British Vogue which exposed the magnitude of the feud between the two.
The documentary has been highly praised for being the first to film inside Vogue’s London headquarters in 100 years – delving behind the scenes and into the lives of those who work for the magazine, and those who grace its cover. But it would seem that behind the glitz and the glamour all is not well in the Vogue family.
It apparently all began in 1992 when Shulman became the Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue after leaving her position at British GQ, with Wintour commenting that Shulman didn’t have the fashion pedigree for the role at Vogue.
Since then it’s been no secret that the pair have been less than favourable with each other, but none so more apparent than with the drama surrounding their April cover issues this spring in which Shulman had Rihanna for her May cover issue, but then swapped this feature for April after discovering Wintour would also be using Rihanna for the same month.
As two of the most influential women in the fashion industry, Wintour and Shulman have never been afraid of confrontation, and the cut-throat culture of the fashion industry. Whatever the origins, or the outcome, of their rivalry both ladies can be proud of how they have propelled both the U.S and British editions of Vogue across the globe.
