It’s the time of year that every accident-prone girl dreads. Goodbye to the safety of the little black dress and hello dangerous and unsure territory of the little white dress. Oh how we envy the girls who can glide about all day in a floaty white dress without incurring so much as a smudge! How do they do it? Do they not like chocolate!

With boho well and truly back and rumours of a heatwave circulating there is no avoiding the curse that is the little white Dress. So if like me you are ridiculously accident prone but do want to give the LWD a try this summer follow the Semple guide to avoid the pitfalls (and spillages) along the way.
Check the weather
Only ever brave a white dress if there is not so much as a 1% chance of rain. Otherwise you know that you will get caught unawares in a downpour and that cute white shirtdress suddenly becomes very workplace inappropriate!
Swing Shirt Dress, £30, ASOS
Take a cover-up
Always make sure you have a cover up on hand when wearing white. A long cardigan or kimono is perfect for covering up accidental spillages or a saviour if the temperature suddenly drops. Nothing looks sadder than shivering in white.
Palazzo Trousers, £55, Topshop
Avoid messy food
We all wish we were the type of girl who could eat ice cream without dripping or drink red wine without spilling but when we are wearing white we have to be honest with ourselves and accept that we are just not that girl. If spillage free clothes are more important to you then ice cream then stay well away when wearing white.
Mango Boho Smock Dress, £39.99, ASOS
Don’t go maxi
A full length white dress will always look bridal so, unless you are planning your nuptials, steer clear. A white maxi and dirty pavements are also a grimy recipe for disaster.
Boutique Moschino Belted Stretch Cotton Dress, £450, Net-a-Porter
Bodycon is for the brave
Lots of girls look great in white. Lots of girls look great in bodycon. Very few can do both. If you are one of the girls who can, embrace it and flaunt it in front of those of us who can’t. If, like me, white bodycon is not for you, stick to the white floaty boho vibe this summer.
Crepe Asymmetric Hem Bodycon Dress, £25, Missguided
Mostly importantly, don’t forget that sometimes spillages just happen and those who don’t spill probably aren’t having all that much fun! So throw caution to the wind and wear white proudly in the sunshine (if it ever turns up!).
