When it comes to home comforts, we are all so wonderfully different. In fact, you may not even realise they are a home comfort until you stop and think. They may change seasonally – or weekly – but it is these that make our house a home, and help to make it the best place in the world.
As I type this, the rain is pitter-pattering on the window – as it turns out spring hasn’t quite made its grand entrance just yet – but there’s something quite comforting in that alone, especially when you know there’s no reason for you to step outside. You can make a cup of tea, keep your dressing gown on, read a few pages of your book, or light the fire and snuggle down to watch a film. You see, it is these very things that perfectly epitomise a home comfort.
They are not there to set the world on fire, or cause great outlandish expense, but rather to make you feel comfortable, content, happy and serene in your surroundings.
Lighting the fire and snuggling down to read your book as the wind and the rain whirl outside do tend to be more reminiscent of cold winter day activities, but there’s no reason they can’t be implemented when the April showers arrive in full force either.

As with many things in life, home comforts will vary from person to person and from home to home. “Things in a house that make it comfortable” is a perfectly ambiguous meaning. When you are away from home for work or on holiday abroad, we always confess to missing our home comforts. Those pleasures and rituals that can only be done in the comfort of our own homes.
Perhaps you look forward to an afternoon to yourself to have a long, hot soak followed by a pampering session to paint your nails and put on a facemask, or find comfort in baking, sewing or reading the newspaper at the kitchen table.
The truth is, it is these very acts and daily doings, that when you put them all together, help to make your house a home – and make you realise that sometimes, there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.
