When the weather isn’t quite playing ball, it can always be a struggle to know what to wear. Our seasonal clocks are screaming ‘it’s spring’, but the weatherman is saying something entirely different. Us Brits are famed for talking about the weather at every opportunity, and it’s true that it dictates our moods for many of us, but the spring and summer months can be so unpredictable.
We wade through the cold, dark months of winter just longing for a little warmer weather to wake us up from our slumbers, before we find ourselves in yet another flurry of snow throughout the month of March followed by a rainy 4-day Bank Holiday weekend. I’m sure many would agree with me when I say how much I am looking forward to the true arrival of spring.
Sure, the lighter evenings are a breath of fresh air and the spouts of sunshine have been warmly welcomed, but much of my spring wardrobe remains untouched. When I do venture to wear a lighter jacket or suede shoes, it tends to start raining. So, how do we dress for this transitional weather? While thick winter coats and chunky roll-necks are no longer at the forefront of our minds, it’s still not quite warm enough for pretty summer dresses and open-toe sandals.
Those milder days we’ve been seeing more of in the last few weeks (albeit sparingly) present the perfect opportunity for pairing a favourite midi skirt with a thin knit. A gentle nod to spring without having to spend the day shivering and regretting your choice come the afternoon.
Lighter textures and colours are great for this time of year too – embrace the pastel trend with sunshine yellows, lavender-inspired lilacs and charming cornflower blue. While it may be too chilly for bare legs, introduce coloured jeans, pastel cardigans and embroidered blouses until the warmer weather arrives.
