Although the heavens decided to open over the Bank Holiday weekend, temperatures have finally started to soar and it’s beginning to look a lot like summer has arrived. Reaching the mid-twenties last week, dressing for work or evenings out can prove a little tricky – especially if you have to endure a long commute in amongst the bustling heat of other commuters, before sitting in an overly air conditioned office for the next eight hours. You want to look smart, but feel comfortable and stylish – it’s no easy feat!

When it comes to trends, many you have to take with a pinch of salt, and others may not take your fancy at all. One thing you can be sure of though, is that they will always come back around, sooner or later. Gingham is certainly one such trend, and you don’t have to look like an oversized picnic blanket or Little Bo Peep to pull it off either.

A subtle check, much like the classic Breton stripe, can work wonders in your wardrobe and it’s perfect for transitioning from day to night too. Even for those who perhaps don’t feel ‘on trend’ will find themselves investing in gingham because it’s such a timeless print, and while it’s having its hay-day now, it has always held a special place in the world of fashion. From Brigitte Bardot to Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy, to modern day muses like Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo, gingham has remained a firm fashion favourite for many decades.

Scouring the high-street and high-end stores, I’ve selected five of my favourite gingham pieces that will have you yearning for a traditional summer picnic in no time.
