visual-connecting-dots-1

During our first meeting of 2016 I proposed to the team that this would be a year of consolidation. I promised not to come up with too many new ideas and I think I saw a few eyes flicker in disbelief.

The Semple team had some great achievements in 2015. One example, our magazine Semple VIII was published in November 2015 on Issuu a publishing platform that has 25m titles including Vogue and Elle. Issuu’s Vice President of Marketing tweeted how he liked our magazine, this great feedback led to the magazine being featured on the Issuu homepage and we watched our readership rise from 40K to 1.2m in 10 days. We are now analysing this unexpected shift as it will help shape our future thoughts and actions. It’s an exciting phase.

There are four core areas of MSL business: The Semple Dress Collection, Semple Magazine and blog, events, and book publications on stories about people and their treasured garments. My emphasis in 2016 on consolidation means the whole team focus is on excellence – by undertaking new self-learning around core skills while at work and raising awareness of the Semple brand in innovative ways.

I began 2016 by refreshing my LinkedIn connections and this has led to face-to-face meetings and phone calls to learn what others from my networks are up to and to seek new synergies. What did you do?

Throughout my life I have undertaken many creative, agenda-driven and commercial projects, always pursued new ideas, contributed to new policy in public life and as a consequence have adapted and reinvented myself several times. To some this activity may appear unconnected, but of course that is not true. I didn’t know 5 years ago that I would establish Semple but looking back the ‘dots’ were already connecting up. Being entrepreneurial, philanthropic and commercial are in my DNA.

I’m reminded of a Steve Jobs quote: “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”

Happy New Year and I look forward to engaging with you when it is right for you.
