Now I’m a summer lover, winter is just not for me. But over the past three years I’ve learnt to love it through the beautiful city of Cardiff. If you want culture and shopping, but without the crowds of London then Cardiff is your go-to city. It has featured in many top 10 lists such as ranking 9th best place to go Christmas shopping in the UK by The Telegraph, 3rd best student city by studentcities.co.uk and even came 6th in the 2011 National Geographic Traveller List as best place to visit in the world! That’s pretty impressive for a little old city in Wales. So let me take you on a tour as to why Cardiff is the city to be in this winter.
The problem I always find with shopping in London is that the shops are all over the place, which is great if you have the time or know the areas well enough; otherwise I find it too much. Whereas Cardiff has St David’s Shopping centre with St David’s 2 and Queen’s Arcade on its doorstep. It has pretty much everything you could ask for. But the best bit of Cardiff during winter is the smaller arcades full of vintage shops, boutiques and the Christmas Market. The market sells everything from beautiful handmade paintings to decorations. Walking through the market and the high street you will be surrounded by music and lights; people are playing instruments and singing everywhere you look.
My favourite part of Cardiff during Christmas is all about the cocktail bars. As the nights begin earlier, what better way to start your evening that with some cheap, but well-made cocktails. To name a few there is Live Lounge, 10 Feet Tall and more recently, 10 Mill Lane. I encountered my first journey to 10 Mill Lane earlier this winter on a trip back to Cardiff and it is amazing; always full of people, a few handsome bar staff and great music to top it off, Mill Lane is definitely the place to be.
Whereas the summer is all about the daytime, I’ve now learned to appreciate the night and how beautiful and fun the winter can be. Christmas is about being with friends and family and what better way to do that than in a city that comes together to celebrate in style without the price tag. I may be being a bit biased, but Cardiff it really is a beautiful city.
