Reaching your late twenties can be a funny time when it comes around. It slowly creeps up you, having spent most of your early twenties planning what you’ll be doing and how you’ll have everything figured out by the time it does. You’ll have the great, well-paid job, the house – albeit with a huge mortgage – be getting married – or starting a family – and everything will have fallen into place.

Of course, this is perhaps more society’s expectation than yours. Perhaps you don’t want to walk down the aisle – or you already have – perhaps you’ve always wanted to be a stay-at-home mum or you’re still waiting to achieve those qualifications to land your dream job. The universal and resounding truth though, is that everyone is different. Everyone wants and aspires for different things in life. What you best friend strives for could be a completely different to the path you’ve chosen. While one friend is getting married in a beautiful barn in the countryside, another may be reeling from a break-up and deciding that a 6-month South America back-packing holiday is the best resolution. It can be a confusing, frustrating, and yet wonderful time.

Don’t compare your life to others. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon, they shine when it’s their time.

At this stage of your life, perhaps more than any other, I think it’s so important not to make comparisons or compare your life to that of a friend, colleague or sibling. It’s a terribly easy thing to do, but it’s true what they say that comparison is the thief of joy.

Take time to enjoy and savour the path you’re on now. You’ll look back in a few years and realise that all those smaller steps – those hopeful dreams of buying a house, getting married or going on an adventure – were actually all slowly coming true.
