It was in 2003 that The Black Eyed Peas released ‘Where Is The Love?’ a song that shot straight to number 1 in 13 different countries; the power of the song at the time was palpable, standing out as a welcome relief from the trivial messages of partying, drink and sex that flooded popular music. The song spoke of multiple difficult issues within our society, terrorism and racism to name a few, but still today the question remains…where’s the love?
“But if you only have love for your own race, then you only leave space to discriminate, and to discriminate only generates hate.”
We are the generation of a misguided war on terror, we are Brexit, we are global warming and we are still having to fight for black lives. With the faces of our time being the likes of George W. Bush, Nigel Farage and Donald Trump did we really stand a chance? Turn on the news or log onto any social media platform and you’ll be flooded with images of our self-destruction and sadly everyday we become less and less affected by the images we see; we’ve become accustomed to this type of life in which pain, war and inequality is the norm.
It’s not until these harrowing photographs are seen side by side and the issues are spoken about all together that we realise the state of our world. So in response to our threatening reality The Black Eyed Peas have revised their former hit song, inviting famous faces to help them once again question the world on some harsh truths.
As part of their #WHERESTHELOVE campaign The Black Eyed Peas, with the help of alternative news publishers ATTN, have launched a site dedicated to the movement hoping to inspire our tired generation. With information on education and military funds, as well as a dedicated #DONT4GET area helping to raise funds for our world issues.
It’s a drop in the ocean, but a small and important step towards facing the hate and adversity we have allowed thus far. So let’s stand together and believe there is hope for us yet.
