new

My boyfriend and I were talking the other day about weekends and how quickly they always seem to go. Leading up to them we make a mental plan of what we’d like to do,  such as seeing  family and friends and making arrangements for eating in and dining out, yet before we know it, it’s Sunday night and another weekend has passed us by.

Following on from this conversation about time led us onto a discussion about hobbies or should I say the lack thereof. Growing up we always wanted to try everything, to be on every team and fill our evenings and weekends competing, playing and creating. As we get older though, we may only carry one or two of these hobbies with us into adulthood, and for many of us, we leave them behind altogether in favour of boxsets and social gatherings.

Hobbies can be such a wonderful way to switch off from the modern day stresses life throws at us but also to reattach yourself and ignite new passions. Learning new skills can lead to meeting new people and trying something you may never have dreamt of before.

Many of us may ponder and think about new hobbies we’d like to try – which tend to be compiled in a New Years resolution list no doubt – but we will more often than not skip through the year unwittingly and before we know it, it’s November. We may have watched 3 new series’ on Netflix and posted hundreds of pointless tweets, but we haven’t tried our hand at anything new.

Yesterday I was listening to the radio and it mentioned a resurgence in people learning to joust – now while I’m not thinking about popping on my armour and riding a horse just yet, it did get me thinking about all the wonderful, exciting and creative things that are laying in wait for us.

I remember thinking back in 2010 whilst I was off travelling about how much I would like to start pottery, but more than 7 years on and I still haven’t signed up to a class for no other reason other than I keep putting it off.

So maybe, just maybe, I’ll look into that this weekend…
