Timeless Trends: The Breton Stripe

Talking about the rise of the polka dot trend in recent weeks, it got me thinking about other enduring trends that continue to stand the test of time. Those sartorial inclinations that we continue to wear, year in, year out, season after season. Those prints or styles that defy age barriers, trend forecasters, predictions and even genders.

It seems, however, a never-ending search to find the ‘perfect’ Breton. We fill our wardrobes with replicas and interpretations, hoping that this one, or that one, will in fact be the one. There are so many varieties to choose from – which makes that all-encompassing search such a difficult one. From the thick to the very thin, the navy to the red, the boatneck to the ¾ length sleeves – it’s no wonder we harbour more than one style of Breton in our wardrobes.

We see them worn elegantly by Kate Middleton and more casually by Siena Miller, Alexa Chung or Camille Rowe. They can be dressed up or dressed down, worn with jeans or denim shorts. Paired with dungarees or a midi skirt.

Whether you own only one style (what’s your secret?) or, let’s say several, there really is a Breton for everyone. Seen perhaps as a more summer style staple, they can be worn just as easily through the colder months of autumn and winter too with a rain mac or chunky cardigan.
