A colour synonymous with sunshine and happiness, yellow is a popular colour in the fashion world. It seems too, walking past spring window displays and browsing online, that it is to be a much-worn colour as we venture into the warmer months of 2019.
Yellow doesn’t just have to mean all boldness and brightness either. More subtle and softer tones of yellow can look beautiful when worn every day. So too are the richer, buttery yellows that pair so perfectly with tan and camel hues. Mustards and ochre – both making waves in the interior’s world – are beautiful shades to wear now as transitional colours. Or, if you adhere to the rule that bold is best, bright sunshine yellows are perfect for wearing not only when those sunshine-filled days do arrive, but on these seasonal grey days too.
The trick perhaps, is choosing which shade of yellow best suits you. Once you’ve established that, it’s all to do with which pieces you decide to invest in. Bright accessories are perfect for adding a small but noticeable pop of colour, while a bold knit or pair of trousers will make a sartorial statement. If you’re thinking about layers, or something you’ll wear time and time again, a duster coat or jacket is a brilliant option. What’s more, it can be worn over an array of complementing colour palettes.
At first, it may seem that yellow is a rather tricky colour to wear. And yet, its subtlety is what makes it so perfect for spring. Pair lighter yellows with creams and white for an all-neutral and chic outfit or add soft greys for more of an understated feel. I’ve always thought black too harsh – and it’s difficult to shake that ‘bumblebee costume’ look – so why not try dark browns or lighter tans with soft yellow?
I’m always an advocate for wearing what you like with what – after all, that’s really what style is – but when it comes to trying a new or different colour, it’s important to think how it works in your wardrobe; and how to create effortless outfits you feel comfortable in.
