While here in Britain, we’re never quite sure how long the summer season will last – or in fact, when it will even arrive – investing in a summer wardrobe can be somewhat difficult. Unless of course, you’re planning a summer holiday abroad with guaranteed sunshine.

Although the high-street and high-end stores shower us with shorter shorts, barely-there dresses and an array of swimwear every year, it seems frivolous somehow to add too many pieces to our wardrobe for fear we will only have a few days where we can realistically wear them all – without being too cold. Travel abroad to Europe or further afield, and of course, we can wear these pieces to our heart’s content, but the British summer has never been one for prolonged bouts of sunshine.

While we can be easily led with wearable summer trends and pretty swimsuits, there are one or two timeless trends that are always worth investing in for the summer season. From the timeless Breton stripe to rattan accessories, faithful pastel shades to pretty florals, they’re perfect for re-wearing year after year, and for making full use of the sunshine when it does decide to put its hat on.

The Breton – Wonderfully timeless and notably versatile, the Breton stripe seamlessly bridges the gap between age and gender – arriving every year in an array of different styles for men, women, young and old.

Florals – Although primarily associated with spring and summer, the faithful floral blooms all year round. Whether you prefer them small and ditsy or large and blossoming, they perfectly epitomise the warmer, sun-filled months.

The Basket – Becoming a must-have accessory in recent years, the basket bag has long reigned in the accessory stakes for summer across Europe. Perfect for taking to the farmer’s market, on a picnic, or to the shops – opt for a classic, natural and enduring design.

Pretty Pastels – Much like florals, it seems we are always drawn to pretty pastels following the arrival of spring. From pale blues to lemon yellows and blush nudes, this wearable palette will undoubtedly return year after year.
