The Wedding Guest: A Different Perspective

Compared to the last few years, this year is a quiet one in terms of weddings as I only have one to attend. Although it’s an important one as my older brother is getting married in September. I’ve mentioned many times before that at this time in your life when you reach your late 20s and early 30s, you receive an influx of invitations for weddings, christenings and baby showers.

When it comes to attending weddings, deciding on what to wear can always cause a little stress leading up to the big day – is it still inappropriate to wear white? Will you be too cold in a strapless dress? Will you be able to dance sufficiently when the DJ comes on and you’re wearing a tight dress? Will you, and this is perhaps the worst scenario, turn up in the same outfit as another guest? It’s a difficult thing to master, you want to look nice but feel comfortable. You want to be dressed appropriately but not look over (or under) dressed. What’s more, you don’t want to spend a fortune, especially if you’ve had a hen party to attend and must travel for the wedding itself.

It’s easy to find a beautiful dress with a hefty price-tag, but how to find a beautiful dress – that no-one else will be wearing – with a more modest price-tag?

For the last few weddings, where I wasn’t a bridesmaid, I’ve opted for a midi skirt & pretty top combination. While some may feel this isn’t smart enough for wedding guest attire, it holds little worry that someone else will turn up in the same outfit, and equally, it means you can re-wear either pairing another time too.

Of course, if you opt for a vintage number or fancy trying your hand at thrifting, there are some beautiful midi skirts to be found with original embellishment or tulle detail – but if you prefer something a little newer, here are a few of my favourites that are perfect for pairing with a plain tee or silk top:
