The sunshine has finally appeared and if you’re anything like me you’ll be panicking about the wardrobe space available for the new trends that have been brightening up the high street. But before you dash off in a mad panic and purchase anything in pastel, take a step back and cleanse the home of your clothes. Over the winter months your poor wardrobe has been overwhelmed by knitwear and darkened by the black shades of autumn/winter, but it’s time you hit the refresh button. Whilst spring is still in the air, there’s nothing that a wardrobe detox can’t fix.

Start a Fresh

Don’t hold back and simply rifle through a few items items, take it all out. Yes, you heard me, every single garment and shoe, move it out! Making your wardrobe completely empty ensures you’re starting your summer wardrobe with a clean slate, as well as making your mind feel less cluttered. You’ll be amazed at how invigorating it can be. Now before you run screaming from the mountain of clothes in front of you, take a few moments to consider where you’re at in your life, and how your style has developed. If it helps create a Pinterest board of what sums up your favourite outfits and how you want to dress. Doing this will give you a focus and ensure that the items you put back adhere to your new style.

Use it or Lose it

Before you begin to put it all back, go through each item individually. You might be there for some time, but be honest with yourself. If you haven’t worn an item in the past 6 months you’re probably not going to wear it in the next 6 months, so get rid of it. If you keep telling yourself you’re going to fit into those two sizes too small jeans, chuck them. There should be nothing in your wardrobe that makes you feel anything less than amazing! It might be a brutal approach but just keep in the back of your mind the amount of space you’re making for NEW clothes, and of course doing your bit for charity.

Get Serious

As any fashion follower or style savvy gal will know, wardrobes should always be on rotation, switching between winter clothes and summer clothes, and separating them appropriately. If you have any space available, try to keep your seasonal clothes completely separate from each other. A good idea is to have a spare suitcase that you can use to store them away so they won’t conflict with each other and cause you more ‘what to wear’ dilemmas. Having your favourite winter aran knit overshadowing your summer tea dresses is a stress that can be avoided.

Take Notes

Whilst you’re editing your wardrobe, don’t forget to take notes of any key pieces that you’re missing or you think would work well with your current clothes. Creating a useful shopping list will ensure that any future trips to the shop can be well rewarded with a few new pieces. After all, any excuse to hit the shops always works in our books.
