As always, when the seasonal biannual Fashion Weeks come around, I tend to look more towards the streets for inspiration rather than the catwalks. Don’t get me wrong, the eclectic vibes of Raf Simon’s Calvin Klein debut and fuss-free looks from The Row certainly caught my eye as New York kicked off the first week of the A/W17 fashion shows, but I am always drawn more to the show-goers than the collections themselves.
What’s more, with heavy snowfall plaguing NYC, it was inspiring to see how the city’s best fashionistas stayed both warm and stylish as they traipsed cautiously between shows. Once winter is upon us, I find it difficult to dress in anything other than a thick cable knit jumper and boots for fear of feeling the chill. Not to mention it’s often dark when I get dressed in the mornings, so to limit the time between changing from my PJs to my outfit, I often opt for the cosiest item I own.
I think it’s easy to feel trapped in a style rut during these dark and dreary months before the welcoming onset of spring, so it’s refreshing to catch a glimpse of a little colour and pattern strutting through the streets of New York, highlighting the best ways to banish those winter fashion clichés we all fall victim to.
With smart tailoring, bold patterns, designer bags, sports trainers and different textures all in abundance, the bitter temperatures clearly didn’t hinder the sartorial creativity, if anything, they enhanced it.
