Stella McCartney A/W 2011 Preview

Last night, premium retail destination Harvey Nichols presented an intimate yet exquisite preview of Stella McCartney’s A/W 2011 collection, which will no doubt be a serious contender to take numerous style conscious women through the autumn and festive period. Acquired by the Gucci Group in 2001, the label has become synonymous with paired back, effortless style including superbly crafted trouser suits and 1970s denim, notably inspired by her late mother Linda McCartney.

Although Stella herself was not present at the event, every detail including the flowing champagne and mini tofu burgers embodied her highly celebrated ethical and elegant vision. The collection was superbly presented by four of her finest models on an imaginary runway that weaved through the avid audience. Shades of black, navy, grey and white provided a vast change from the spring collection which featured bright fruit prints. Her usual androgynous and laid back aesthetic was represented in the form of beautifully tailored trousers and mannish suit jackets, a key trend for the coming season. Oversized winter coats, boxy white sweaters and mini dresses were also a great way of highlighting a new direction in chunky knitwear silhouettes.

Chunky knitwear, long winter coats and masculine tailoring from the A/W 2011 Stella McCartney collection.

We were particularly enamoured by the ultra feminine, stand alone polka dot pieces appliqued over sheer tulle fabrics that can be worn discreetly under smoking jackets or more boldly as figure hugging dresses in either black or white. This felt reminiscent of the 1980s era and gave the designs a subtle vintage feel. The new collection will be going into Harvey Nichols this September 2011.
