We all know the basics that make a good, hard-working wardrobe; black fitted t-shirt, smart white shirt, the perfect pair of skinny jeans. But there are some items that might not be the most practical or the most adaptable but you really want in your wardrobe all the same. Here is our checklist of the non-essential wardrobe essentials:
Oversized Knit Jumper
We are talking so big you can’t be sure if you are wearing it or drowning in it. It might not be the most flattering item but on cold winter evenings in front of a fire or for autumnal walks at the weekend it will be the item you reach for time after time.
Minkpink Chunky Knit Jumper, £58, Urban Outfitters
Socks, Socks and more Socks!
Never underestimate how many socks you might need. If worn strategically they can magically transform an outfit from mundane to fashion forward. Try to stock up in all lengths, varieties and colours and always be exceptionally gratefully when you relatives buy them for you at Christmas.
Wolford Sheer Spot Socks, £14, ASOS
Faux Fur Coat
Yes they conjure up images of Courtney Love and/or Cruella de Vil but there is no fashion item as gloriously trashy or as outrageously fun as a faux fur coat. Think faux fur is not for you? Try one on and we dare you not to instantly bring out your wannabe rock star swagger.
Stella McCartney Faux Fur Coat, £1,100, Net-a-Porter
Skyscraper Heels
Every girl should own at least one pair of shoes that beget squeals of “how can you walk in them?”. Heels so high they demand their own taxi service and when wearing them you feel both ridiculously sexy and just ridiculous. You will probably wear them once and then vow never again but you will always have that one night and you will always smile and remember them fondly.
Lawson Heels, £120, Kurt Geiger
Comfy Jeans
They may be skinnies, they might be boyfriend slouchy but they will be comfortable and most likely falling apart by now. Everyone has that one pair of jeans that they can’t bear to get rid of, and why should you? They’ve stood by you through changing seasons, attended festivals and beer gardens with you and probably know more about you than your best friend. Even if they don’t fit you anymore, never throw these jeans away.
Wide Leg Flare Jean, £290, Victoria Beckham
