spring trends

It’s always interesting to hear about the latest spring trends. Those sartorial inclinations we caught on the catwalks last year, and which are now making their way into high-street stores.

S/S18 is an interesting mix of colour, texture and of course, florals. Much like the trends we’ve been pinning and double tapping for the home and interiors, it’s all about making a statement. Many have claimed the trends for this year represent our aversion to the goings on in 2017, political or otherwise, hence why we’re seeing big, bold and oh so beautiful!

From sheer fabrics to rainbow colours, we saw lots of influence from the 1980s too in the form of shoulder pads, trouser suits and bold prints, together with a big focus on accessories. Power dressing at its finest!

While Versace ticked off many trends in their tribute catwalk show to Gianni Versace (marking the 20th anniversary of his untimely death), we saw brights, pastels, fringing and polka dots from an array of different shows at Celine to Chanel, Givenchy to Gucci, and Anya Hindmarch to Alexander Wang.

So, here are five trends which are all together practical, wearable and fun in equal measure for the spring months ahead:

Sheer – On first glance, it’s not always an easy look to pull off – but the warmer weather makes it a little easier. From pretty embroidery on sheer fabrics including tulle and silk to transparent bags and boots (as seen at Chanel). If you’re not quite brave enough to adorn yourself in, well, nothing, then the transparent rain mac makes a handy and practical statement too!

GEORGIA ALICE

New Angel silk-chiffon midi dress £680

The Bum Bag – That’s right – that 1980s/90s trend once laughed at and ridiculed has returned in spectacular fashion. With many luxury options available at Gucci, Givenchy, Kate Spade and Alexander Wang, there’s little doubt the humble fanny pack will venture onto the high-street soon enough. Handy? Yes. Fashionable? The Jury’s still out, but luckily it can also be worn diagonally like we saw at Balenciaga.

GUCCI

GG Marmont quilted leather belt bag £765

High-Waisted Trousers – A more wearable trend that is very reminiscent of 1980s-style, this season it’s all about the silhouette they create with nipped in waists and the illusion of longer legs. With tailored suits seen on the catwalks of Isabel Marant and Marc Jacobs, it seems as though the fashion world has referred back to one of its most timeless muses, Princess Diana.

MICHELLE MASON

Silk-charmeuse wide-leg pants £520

Polka Dots – A trend we’ve already been seeing on the high-street, it was very popular on the catwalks of Valentino and Self Portrait. An easy trend to adopt – especially in traditional monochromatic hues – it’s perfect for workwear too.

DRAPER JAMES

Polka-dot jacquard skirt £425

Lilac – When spring rolls around, we’re used to seeing a barrage of pretty pastels to accompany it, and this season is certainly no different. From pistachio greens at Sies Marjan to melons at Hermes and hues of lavender at Victoria Beckham and Tom Ford, these whimsical ice-cream shades are a firm favourite. Can’t decide on your favourite flavour? Mix them all together like a delicious bowl of Neapolitan ice cream!
