When we think about the different rooms in our home and consider those that we spend the most time in, the kitchen – for many of us – often rules the roost. It’s a space where we cook, dine, talk, chat, come together and eat. It is the hub of the home. Whether a beautiful old farmhouse kitchen with flagstone flooring and a comforting AGA, or a contemporary kitchen in a small apartment, it still means the same and holds the same function.

A dream kitchen remains a board on many people’s Pinterest account – it is a room, much like the bedroom perhaps, that we dream of renovating, redesigning and remodelling. It’s an important room, one that family and friends see on a regular basis. We want it to represent us and reflect our lives – whether it revolves around family, a busy schedule or a quiet life reaching retirement.

A kitchen needs to ooze character and convenience – whether you’re fond of cooking or prefer something quicker, the appliances and layout need to mirror our changing needs.

We’ve seen many trends come and go and some remain firmly placed in the popularity stakes. A country kitchen seems eternally popular while the navy trend teamed with shaker-style cabinets and brass hardware is showing no signs of slowing down either. While trends prove useful for inspiration and deciding what it is we like, a kitchen remains a very personal space. Despite interior design magazines and popular Instagram accounts, a kitchen island isn’t always needed, using Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe (although beautiful) may in fact make your kitchen look much darker than it actually is if natural light is sparse, and sometimes, standard tiles work just as nicely as the popular metro style we’ve been seeing a lot of.

The kitchen needs to be a space that you enjoy spending time in, especially if you love to cook, bake and entertain friends. If it’s smaller than you would like, utilise light and bright colours and textures to make it seem bigger, and if you’re renting, adding a few homely accessories can really make a world of difference.
