“Don’t be a D.N.B!” This is what Ronda Rousey’s mother taught her when she was a young girl, but little did she know this would soon be the mantra to her life. A D.N.B – ‘do nothing b***h; a woman who sits around and waits for a man to take care of her. Ronda being the UFC’s first female fighter to rocket to fame has taken it all in her stride, staying true to her humble roots and sticking up for her independent and often dominating attitude to life.

In late 2012 the UFC decided to introduce the first ever Women’s MMA and with Rousey having just won the title of Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion she was an obvious choice when thinking about who they would sign. Since then she has been undefeated, winning all but one of her fights in the first round and over half of them with her signature arm bar move. Rousey is known to be ruthless; never backing down and never afraid. Named as the number one Most Dominant Athletes Alive this year, she has said “I’m gonna talk a bunch of s**t. And I’m gonna break a couple of girls’ arms, and I’m not gonna feel the least bit sorry about it.” But don’t worry she can take it just as much as she can dish it out, stating that she’d rather someone broke her own elbow in an arm lock rather than give up and tap out in a fight.

Rousey is quickly becoming one of the world’s greatest fighters with male and female fans alike cheering her on – they’re even willing to tune into their pricey pay-per-view channels regardless of her fights lasting around the 14 second mark. It’s clear that she works extremely hard to stay on top although being an athletic woman is not all championships and titles, with constant remarks about her appearance most notably being ‘she looks like a man’. For anyone comments like this would become a little wearing, but Ronda – who is affectionately known as ‘Rowdy’ by her fans – takes it all on her stride. “I think it’s hilarious, just because my body was developed for a purpose [other than the male gaze] doesn’t mean it’s masculine. I think it’s femininely badass because there’s not a single muscle on my body that isn’t for a purpose.”

With Rousey what you see is what you get; she’ll never pretend to be anyone she’s not and at just 28 there’s still a lot of fight in her. You’ll regularly catch her without make up and she’s not afraid to say what’s on her mind. As a woman in the spotlight she’s a welcome breathe of fresh air for a lot of people around the world. From rags to riches she’s now the highest paid UFC fighter, but it’s not all about the money and since she practiced Judo at a young age under the watchful eye of her champion mother, winning has been the goal. It’s a deep rooted desire within herself that restarts every morning, challenging her to wake up before her alarm being the first victory of every day. So if you’re lacking inspiration today; whether it’s to get yourself to the gym or to take a career leap of faith, remember one thing…don’t be a D.N.B. Get up and do something great – get Rowdy!
