Art deco is in the air as DAKS took us back to the realms of the Great Gatsby for SS16. But in a refreshing new take on the era there wasn’t a flapper dress in sight as Creative Director Filippo Scuffi brought the 20s and 30s firmly into the 21st century with a fresh new take on the art deco epoch.DAKS SS16

As the skylight of Lindley Hall opened, the magnificent space was awash with bright September sunshine, bouncing off of the stark marble runway. As ever prints and texture played a poignant role in the collection, with a signature geometric print – in both monochrome and lilac blue hues – taking centre stage.

Dresses came in a variety of styles from classic 20s drop hems to flowing chiffon maxis, in prints which subtly replicated the marble backdrop. As ever tailoring played a significant role in the collection, as belted blazers and oversized co-ordinates in various shades of grey brought a refreshing modern element to the art deco collection.

A rich caramel suede gave the collection warmth through collared bombers, pocketed pencil skirts and dress trim detail. Black calfskin purses and cross strap sandals completed the decadent profile. The show stopping finale came in the form of a structured paper bag maxi skirt coupled with a crisp white tuxedo shirt beautifully summing up the collection. Classic, clean and romantic, the DAKS woman of SS16 will cut a fluid, sleek silhouette.

DAKS SS16

Having witnessed the work of Filippo Scuffi for four consecutive seasons, it is his deep rooted understanding of just who the DAKS woman is that impresses. From the geometric decadence of SS16 to the biker chic intensity of AW15, Scuffi never fails to convey the classic silhouettes and ‘metropolitan’ air that defines the DAKS DNA. Her style and mindset is engrained in his thought process and will continue to be represented through his creative vision for many seasons to come.
