You would think that getting a manicure would be an easy task. A luxury that can be completed with a phone call and a 30 minute sit down at your local beauty salon. But with an increasing amount of ‘bodged jobs’ filling up our facebook timelines, it can be hard to know if you’re going to end up with a fresh manicure that leaves you posing your hand all over Instagram, or thick talons that consume your nails completely and cause a nightmare when it comes to removal.

The problem is, there are so many rogue traders and unregulated products that can make a trip to the beauty salon as much of a risk as jumping off a cliff. Admittedly that’s a little extreme, but you just don’t know what you’re going to end up with! So to ensure you’re safe and satisfied when you next decide to give yourself a pampering treat, follow this checklist to find a manicurist you can put on speed dial.

Website

Before you pick up that phone and even think about booking an appointment, check if they have a website and when it was last updated. It sounds a little harsh, but if they’re truly of a professional standard their website will represent their professionalism and list the qualifications they hold, as well as the brands that they use. Have a good snoop around and get an idea of what they’re all about, and the treatments that they offer. In some circumstances you may even be able to find an introductory offer that can help you to get a few pennies off!

Facebook

Once you’ve had a good look on their website don’t forget to do a little social stalking as well. We all know that social media is the true face of any business as they can’t hide from recommendations, comments or queries, so everything will be in full view for you to see. Check the salons reviews and if they’re really as good as they say they are, they will most likely have a gallery of their work so you can decide if it’s up to scratch. You can learn a lot from social media, so don’t rush booking that appointment until you’ve had a good nose around.

Recommendation

If you really don’t have the time to put in the leg work for a great manicure then see if there’s a friend who can recommend a great place. Especially if you’ve lusted over their nails, you’ll know what the salons work is like. A recommendation also gives you the opportunity to get an honest review of the beauty salon, as no friend would let her nearest and dearest go through a bad manicure.

Price

Voucher Code and Groupon offers may sound very tempting, especially if you’re on a budget and need a little pick me up. But don’t forget to ask yourself why the price is so low. Is it because they’re new to this so don’t have the experience to give a first class manicure? Or is their business failing because they aren’t great at what they do? Don’t always succumb to a cheap price, as you may end up with what you pay for.
