If you like fashion, then you have probably come across the familiar and signature leggy ink illustrations of Megan Hess. Slender, chic looking model-like figures with oversized dark sunglasses, sets of pearls and coffees in hand are her muse. Drawn outfits to die for and legs that go on forever are the give away of a Megan Hess piece.

Australian born Megan Hess was destined to draw and today her work has been commissioned by some of the world’s most exclusive brands including Chanel, Dior, Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Bergdorf Goodman and the V&A to name but a few. And if you don’t recognise her work from her brand connections, then you certainly will from Candace Bushnell’s number one selling book Sex And The City, as Hess illustrated the cover helping to create the stylistic voice of an entire generation of Carrie mad twenty somethings.

Megan cites that her portfolio of work is inspired by many things; people, fashion, art, travel, Audrey Hepburn, vintage finds, patisseries, old photographs, film noir, the streets of New York, 1970s cocktails, great coffee, laughter, fragrance, and mountains and mountains of chocolate! Yet despite such a long list of inspirations Hess’s illustrations are essentially just sketched figures, yet what they represent is much more than that. She creates the best part of us all, the cosmopolitan girl, the go-getter fashionistas we all secretly hope to be at some point in our day. Polished and poised through her work we can all relate to Megan Hess; from needing a coffee as big as your head just to get through Monday to the desire to get dolled up and strut about town with our girlfriends. The Megan Hess brand – which has taken over Instagram – gives us all that much needed reminder that as women we can be as glamorous and successful as we choose to be, and on our own terms. It is for this reason that fashion heavy weights choose Hess for their campaigns; empowerment created in a few brush strokes topped off with a red lip.
