Our social media saturated existence nowadays means that we’re more exposed to where our products come from and also how they’re made. Gone are the days of our blissful ignorance, when our consumer choices were made solely on pretty packaging and sparkly advertisements.

Whether or not we actively seek this type of information on the market’s biggest brands is no longer in our control, scroll through numerous social platforms and you’ll be faced with videos, petitions and headlines exposing damaging additives and cruel animal testing practices commissioned by our favourite brands.

Now I know that not everyone is affected by these methods of testing and most consumers would rather not know, however there is an entire market of people struggling to find cruelty free brands for a reasonable price tag, without compromising on quality.

The most recent social media trend which includes filming or photographing a Lush bath bomb as it enters bath water – exploding into a multitude of colours and whimsical patterns – has helped to propel Lush into a younger and vibrant audience. Now I kind of get it, their bath bombs are extremely pretty and Instagram worthy, however Lush is a brand that offers so much more than a one-time indulgence.

It’s this audience who are increasingly worried about animal welfare and environmental issues; both of which Lush proudly support, with all of their products being free from animal testing and minimalist packaging which results in less waste. Ethically bought and handmade they’ve cracked the consumer code, whilst sparing a heavy price tag often associated with these types of ‘naked’ brands.

Side by side Lush may seem pricey in comparison, but the quality of their products means that you actually use less than you would usually. I’ve switched from buying a shampoo and conditioner every three weeks, to buying Lush’s Curly Wurly shampoo and Jungle conditioner every 5 weeks! Even their smallest Dark Angels charcoal face wash is still only half empty after a month’s use! Not only that Lush forces you to think about what you actually need from each of your products. With no influential packaging and heaps of natural ingredients you need to pick your product based on your skin type, hair style and personal scent preferences. So next time you pass your local Lush why not have a look around? Who knows, maybe you’ll walk away with a new cruelty free product that you’ll love more than your usual high street brand.
