When we enter into a new year, we find ourselves regaled with trend reports of the best colours to wear in 2019, or how to wear this year’s favourite shade. We see them filter through into our homes, accessories and wardrobes. Before long, hues of these most popular shades will be hanging in our favourite stores and splashed across the pages of our monthly magazines.
It is very hit and miss though. Colour is so wonderfully subjective. What one person loves, another cannot abide. I’ve never understood the fascination with lime green, while others would turn their noses up at pale, pastel hues.
Social media gives us a wonderful insight into how the colour spectrum works in other people’s lives. Those who advocate bold and bright, others who favour the dark side of rich blues and smoky greens, or those who attest to neutrals and crisp whites.
These colours of the year then, will inevitably divide opinion. From Spiced Honey by Dulux to Living Coral by Pantone, we find ourselves swaying more towards the lighter, more natural shades in 2019. There seems to be a correlation to what people need and crave. There is vibrancy and a nod to nature – a clear focus on mindfulness perhaps as we all suffer from the turbulence and uncertainty of political climes.
Living Coral – Pantone’s Colour of the Year – is an interesting one. At first thought it seems a tricky colour to introduce into our homes or wardrobes, and yet it is wonderfully uplifting with its connotations to nature and far-reaching destinations.
Looking to our wardrobes, there are two key ways to wear Living Coral. Either a small dabble by way of a statement bag or earrings – or even a soft cashmere jumper paired with slim fit blue jeans, or head-to-toe. It needn’t be overly bold, nor too brash, but a pair of light coral trousers teamed with a soft pink blouse, cream wool coat and tan accessories to complement, would create a stylish example of how to embrace this year’s colour trend just in time for spring.
