knitwear

While our thoughts are inadvertently turning to autumn, we’re in that transitional period where the seasons are shifting. It feels like summer is passing and autumn is encroaching – the sun is still shining but the leaves are starting to turn. There is a nip in the air first thing in the morning and the sun is starting to set much earlier – a forewarning of what is to come.

The shops started this transition long ago – back in July they were beginning to hang their winter coats and fold their cosy knits on the shelves. We weren’t interested then though. The heatwave sweeping the country was making us dream of sun-drenched days spent in floaty midi dresses and linen blouses with tortoiseshell buttons. Autumn seemed like a million miles away.

Now though, with this seasonal shift we’ve been seeing the last few weeks – and with the arrival of September – our thoughts are starting to shift too. From autumn trends to our autumn wardrobes, the wish lists and shopping trips have no doubt begun.

While it doesn’t quite seem cold enough to be thinking seriously about investing in your new winter coat, a chunky cardigan or cable knit jumper seem a little more appropriate. The noticeable drop in temperature means a cotton t-shirt or sleeveless dress now needs a little something extra to accompany it, just in case. Naturally, we are a little spoilt for choice.

The high-street and high-end stores flatter our love for knitwear year after year. It is an investment though, an item we know we’ll get the wear out of. An item that, when spring rolls back around, we can put under our beds until the colder weather inevitably returns. Composition then, especially when it comes to knitwear, is vitally important. We want to avoid that dreaded itch and invest in items that will wash well and keep us warm in equal measure.
