After a two year break Kings of Leon are back from their hiatus in a big way. The break that was originally meant to last for only 6 months, had fans across the globe wondering if they’d ever make a comeback at all, but with the announcement of their new album WALLS and a US, and UK tour announced, the band are letting it be known that there’s still music in them yet.
With all four members now married and starting families of their own it wouldn’t have been completely unthinkable that they would retire to a quiet life, as away from the spotlight and frustrations of touring as they could be. But for these southern boys the music is as much a part of themselves as each other.
Their story hasn’t been without complications however, with the rock and roll lifestyle having got to them multiple times over their career, from offending crowds in a drunken stupor to arguing with each other in the studio almost to the point of splitting. But the broken hearts and broken bones are just a small part of it all, with number 1 albums, sold out shows and awards being the light in their often dark times.
“All of London sing, ‘cause England swings and they sure love the tales I bring. Those rainy days they ain’t so bad when you’re the King, the King they wanna see.” – Fans, Kings of Leon
Having first exploded onto the music seen in the UK, Kings of Leon have always felt at home here, even dedicating their song ‘Fans’ to their time in the UK. So it was only fitting that they surprised everyone with a last minute gig in London for the fans who have been there from the start. How to bag tickets to the intimate affair was announced on Wednesday just hours before the show itself – what followed was a snapshot into the original, dirty, honest band that first started back in 2000.
Having previously fallen out of love with the lifestyle and the band, frontman Caleb grinned into the mic halfway through Wednesday’s show and declared: “this is the most fun I’ve had playing a show in many years”. If that performance and new album WALLS are a look into the future of the band I’d say a break from the music, the drink and each other was exactly what they needed. So here’s to the Kings, long may they reign.
