A pair of jeans and a t-shirt might sound like the most simple, perhaps even lazy choice of outfit for any day other than one spent at home, doing housework or just chilling out. However, it is in fact one of the ultimate combinations on which to build a fool proof, perfectly stylish look for many occasions.

The average British woman owns 10 pairs of jeans (I actually own 15!) so it really should be easy for anyone to create a variety of different looks and adapt them for any occasion. Of course you don’t need ten pairs, you just need the pairs you have to be well-fitting and to make sure this is the case, always try jeans on before you purchase them. It doesn’t matter what your budget is, everyone is a different shape and even the most expensive brand might look awful on certain people but amazing on others.

The key to making these most simple of pieces look different for every occasion is accessorising. You could start off with a pair of black skinny jeans and a fitted white t-shirt and turn it into a stunning date outfit. Simply by adding a fabulous pair of heels, a big statement necklace and a colour pop blazer, the most basic of items could become a glamorous ensemble. Or you could reverse the look with coloured jeans and a dark blazer, a look once channelled by our own Kate Middleton. If you choose a statement necklace that fits perfectly over the neckline of your tee, you take away the simplicity of the tee and turn it into a whole new piece that could form the basis for many other outfits, even those not including jeans. Swap the statement necklace and heels for ballet pumps and a tote bag and you have a comfy, casual outfit perfect for shopping or doing lunch with your friends. It sounds simple, but remember that less is more.

Jeans and a tee are also the perfect blank canvas for dipping into the pastel trend that is set to be huge for spring/summer. Mix and match different pastel coloured jeans with neutral tees or vice versa and accent the pale colours with a pop of neon on a belt, shoes or a bag. Or you could start with floral patterned jeans and a pastel coloured tee, adding neutral coloured pumps, bag and a jacket which I think, topped off with giant sunglasses, is a perfect airport outfit.

At the other end of the scale, the basic combination is also the perfect base for the rock chick look that is always in style. Almost any jeans would work; boot cut, skinny, acid washed, grey, blue, black, ripped. Wear with a band tee and accessorise with military or biker boots, a leather jacket and skulls, studs and spikes on jewellery or even the shoes, jacket or a bag.

Of course these are just a few of the many possible looks that you could come up with based on these two simplest items of clothing. The key points to remember are to mix and match and accessorise well and you can be both simple and stunning, frugal and fabulous!
