I formed MSL 5 years ago. On 30 July 2010 I decided to set up a company specifically about women. Why? Stimulated by a year of research in to the weft and weave of dress fabric including finding out more about my iconic dress from giant retailer M&S, I knew that there was an exciting opportunity to deepen my curious self.
I wasn’t deterred by the financial climate or indeed the cynics but gained confidence by exploring what such a company might achieve. The journey has been fascinating and each day I learn something new.
I recently read that UK is one of the best places to start up a company. It remains easy and it costs very little. I didn’t seek external finance or loans but used my assets of knowledge, experience, skills, and diverse networks to turn an idea into a reality.
Along the way, there have been so many people who have helped MSL grow. They have each contributed a unique perspective with no expectation of a return. They were, and continue to be, generous. And as for the cynics, they helped me too as they did not understand the power of social media to connect people and how this phenomenon would grow. They thought that women, fashion, and stories were frivolous. The cynics were wrong.
So what have we achieved in 5 years? We are now a global brand. Individuals, small companies, and large brands ask to be associated with us. The team has grown to 10 people, all of whom embody MSL values. We are a business that cares deeply about others, actively pursues ethical solutions, and drives new approaches from that informed position.
The official MSL birthday is in November and as we plan our celebration I hope that you will share our occasion in the way that you do best.
To each and everyone of you, I would like to thank you for your guidance, your support, and your belief in our passions. And for those of you going on holiday during August have a great time.
